World Oral Health Day is celebrated on 20 March, annually. The global campaign provides an ideal platform to raise awareness, and encourage commitments and action to promote good oral health.
Parkview Dental Centre joins the global community of dental practitioners and healthcare providers in championing good oral health practices that play a vital role in protecting the community we serve from any vulnerability to cavities and other oral diseases and conditions.
We emphasize the need to make preventive oral healthcare lifestyle a personal priority for all because oral diseases currently affect nearly 3.5 billion people across the world. Worth noting, that these diseases are often linked to other serious health issues in the body. Neglecting our oral healthcare renders us susceptible to pain, discomfort, social isolation, loss of self-confidence, and wasted hours at work or school.
Six preventive dental care services for better oral health
We can leverage the following to achieve great milestones in line with the 2021-2023 World Oral Health Day theme – Be Proud of Your Mouth.
1. Regular dental visits
To value and take care of your teeth in the right way, you need to visit the dentist every six months. Regular dental visits help diagnose teeth decay, oral cancer, and other dental-related diseases early enough when treatment can be done more effectively and with fewer costs.
2. Professional dental cleaning
Teeth cleaning and polishing leave the surfaces of the teeth clean and smooth so that oral bacteria are unable to stick to them. This gives you a better chance of keeping the teeth clean during your regular home care through brushing and flossing. Dental Cleaning makes your teeth feel lovely, smooth, and clean. Besides, it removes stains caused by foods such as coffee, tea, red wine, or those obtained from smoking. It is during your dental cleaning procedure that dental specialists detect oral disease or any systemic disease that may be having an oral manifestation.
3. Fluoride therapy for children
The use of fluoride for the prevention and control of caries is documented to be both safe and highly effective. Fluoride has several caries-protective mechanisms of action, including enamel remineralization and altering bacterial metabolism to help prevent caries. Based on our caries-risk assessment, we recommend professional fluoride treatment at least every 6 months to children at moderate caries risk. Those with high caries risk should receive a greater frequency of professional fluoride applications, that is every 3-6 months. This treatment is effective in reducing incidences of early childhood caries.
4. Pits and fissure sealants
Sealants are a safe and painless way of protecting your teeth from tooth decay applied to the back teeth – the molars and premolars. Molars and premolars have hollows (pits) and grooves (fissures). Once the process is complete, the sealant forms a smooth, protective barrier by covering all the little grooves and dips in the surfaces of the teeth.
5. Teeth fillings
Fillings are used to close off a hole or space where decay is present which harbours bacteria that move inside the pulp of the tooth. Whenever such decay occurs, you can face a range of problems including tooth pain, abscesses, and additional decay. To know if you are a candidate for teeth fillings, watch out for; Toothache, Sensitivity, Sudden pain when eating or drinking something cold or sweet, Visible holes on the surface of your teeth, Tooth stains, and Pain when biting.
6. Dental crowns after root canal treatment
A dental crown offers the finishing touch after a root canal treatment – sealing the restored tooth and reinforcing it for the long-term look and functionality, especially for molars and premolars which are needed more for chewing. Also, patients who grind and clench their teeth, a condition known as bruxism, certainly need a dental crown after root canal treatment.
